Healthline Media is the second-largest and fastest-growing consumer health media publisher in the world, reaching 125 million people a month. Healthline runs many online communities related to health conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), breast cancer, Crohn's disease, etc.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord. Some people with severe MS may lose the ability to walk independently or at all, while others may experience long periods of remission without any new symptoms. There's no cure for multiple sclerosis.

Why The APP?

Surveys and one-on-one interviews lead to our understanding of the needs of a person with MS in the community. With version 1.0 cold launch of MS Buddy app, we validated the hypothesis that people with multiple sclerosis would benefit from meeting others with similar condition profiles, medications, and life experiences, in order to receive social support, stay updated with the latest research and seek medical support on-demand.

My Role & The Team

I was responsible for all design decisions and deliverables regarding the app and stepped in the shoes of product management when needed.

Process

As a part of the Agile Scrum development process, we had an iterative loop of design and user research that worked in a loop until it reached a satisfactory level for the stakeholders. It was then pushed into production. Here's a visualization of what it looked like:

We used Usertesting.com extensively along with in-house user-interviews to test and validate the various design and product decisions.

Exhaustive user research was conducted to evaluate the usability of the flow right from the sign-up, to setting up the profile, and all the critical features of the app. Key lessons learnt were documented and changes made to reflect and reiterate the user testing until we reached a high level of stakeholder and user satisfaction.
